  • CUP OF JOY

    By Ayesha C

Someone has very rightly said…Coffee is nothing but a hug in a mug. A cup of coffee shared with a friend or a loved one is always happiness shared and time very well spent. Who doesn’t love to wrap their hands around a cup of coffee and swallow it... whether it’s a cold Monday morning or a silent yawn, to pull up your socks and start working or to just relax? Who doesn’t reach for one..

Years ago…treated as an appetite suppressant; it was discovered by Kaldi an Ethiopian goatherd when he noticed how excited his goats became after eating the beans from a coffee plant.
From Middle East, coffee travelled its way to different countries discovering new identities. A German physician Leonhard Rauwolf gave this prescription of coffee after returning from ten year trip to east.

A beverage as black as ink, useful against numerous illnesses, particularly those of the stomach. Its consumers take it in the morning, quite frankly, in a porcelain cup that is passed around and from which each one drinks a cupful. It is composed of water and the fruit from a bush called bunnu.

    — Léonard Rauwolf, Reise in die Morgenländer (in German)

    How cool is that now!!!
There have been lots of discussions as to how much of it is too good to swallow. But, we all know coffee now is another family member in our household. Which is, behind every woman who has to struggle through her day to complete her chores? To help you fight that sleep, so that you can burn the midnight oil. To get you some time to bond with that special person. Or just an excuse to meet that old friend. Any excuse, anytime, a cup of joy is well deserved by all!

The coffee Firenze began even before coffee was even a bean, without letting you ponder over that any further, the history of coffee expanses over 1000 years plus. Travelling all across the globe easily just likes is unique enticing aroma and flagging its unquestionable victory all through. The Story of coffee began in Ethiopia in the early 11th Century, were Caffeinating effects of coffee were first noticed when the goats of Ethiopian’s started “dancing” after eating coffee berries. Post which a farmer curious enough to sniff a pretty looking white blossom flower- forever trapped in the magical smell. Set out to figure how it tasted? He boiled the leaves of the so-called "magical fruit" in water and the resulting concoction. And Bazzang!! The man had his first cup of coffee.

The fame of the coffee spread to other lands mystically, coffee was imported, exported, grown, stolen, borrowed & smuggled, that was power of the taste that coffee had on people. From it all, it wasn’t difficult to conclude that coffee’s centuries-long voyage had just begun. The word "coffee" entered the English language in 1582 (hint: that’s a long long time ago) via the Dutch koffie, borrowed from the Turkish kahve, in turn borrowed from the Arabic qahwah, which basically means every country coffee travelled through, people nicknamed it!

    1. Daredevil 1: The Indonesian people drink coffee, made from the feces of a coffee bean munching cat, this one of the most unique/grossly yummy flavor on earth.

    2. Daredevil 2: Taiwan farmers, let caffeine-crazed monkeys do the work for them. The farmer discovered that the monkey-sucked beans possessed a distinct vanilla flavour. (How did they know about the flavour? They ate it, after the monkey ate the bean and spit it out)

    3. Daredevil 3: Brazilian planters, made jacu bird dung coffee, the bird’s digestive tract removed bitterness in the coffee dint alter the flavour.

    4. Daredevil 4: The Northern Thai People, produced the Black Ivory coffee. This coffee was made from elephant poop and is among the world's most expensive coffees. (I don’t know how that happened).

For those who prefer a drink that's never entered an animal's digestive tract, don’t worry there’s Indian Monsoon Malabar, which might be your very own ticket to paradise.
